Social Responsibility
Until very recently the success of a company was measured by looking at its financial bottom-line. When investors evaluated potential investment options, they were essentially interested in whether the company was making money, and what the prospects were of it continuing to do so. In the last decade, the realization that making money and being a sustainable business required much more than focusing solely on the financial bottom-line, led to the development of the notion of a triple bottom-line.
The Triple bottom Line concept recognizes that a “bottom line” should not solely reflect that economic return on investment of a business. Other assets, which deal with issues of environmental sustainability and social capital, ranging labour practices to community upliftment, should also be included. The concept is underpinned by three societal objectives:
- Economic prosperity
- Social responsibility
- Environmental sustainability
Whilst profits and employment remain important, JHI subscribes to the triple bottom-line concept. The social performance of our business goes much further than the financials - through the empowerment of previously disadvantaged individuals, both economically and at all levels of management; environmental awareness; the provision of a responsible and safe work place; concern about health issues and involvement with community issues are high on the agenda.
The focus area of our social responsibility programme is education and the general upliftment of the community and within this, the primary focus is on encouraging education amongst pre- and primary school children. At the end of 2008 the SRC identified the Thabo Mbeki Day Care Centre in the Lanseria informal settlement as our main project for 2009. The centre provides a crèche service to 38 children between the ages of 1 & 6. Wwe have donated clothes, toys, stationery& appliances so far and future plans include general maintenance, which includes the painting of the interior, fixing of doors and windows and laying carpets in the classrooms.
The secondary focus is on the upliftment of the community through adult education and training so that unemployed adults can develop the necessary skills to become either self employed or part of an entrepreneurial business. Currently, we are making a monthly contribution to the Emthonjeni Sewing Club in Randburg. The club teaches unemployed woman from the Zandspruit informal settlement to do needlework, which is sold to the general public. Our monthly contributions enable the woman to travel by taxi to their place of work.
We also lend monthly financial assistance to the Teddy Bear Clinic and are currently involved in the upgrade of the Clinic. We further make ad-hoc contributions to various other orginasations through supporting golf days, donations of disused computers, sponsorship for educational tours, etc.
We believe that the ability of a business to persist in a truly sustainable state will result from producing a positive and balanced return to all three forms of capital: economic, environmental, and social.
